Watching two pro choice documentaries

I spent Saturday evening at Semora Spraoi where RAG were screening two abortion rights documentaries, ‘The Coat Hanger Project’ and ‘Abortion Democracy : Poland/South Africa’.  The makers of both documentaries were present so the screenings were introduced by them and there was a wide ranging discussion after the films had been show.  I’ve included a link to an audio recording of the introductions at the end of this piece.

Economic metaphors a-go-go

Apparently this year’s (non-)Nobel prize for economics as caused a stir, with the results going to Elinor Ostrom and Oliver Williamson, one of whom it an Institionalist! A somewhat rare breed, the most famous of whom was the late (and important) John Kenneth Galbraith.

Hal Draper, numpty – part deux!

I’ve finally done a proper review of Black Flame and have sent it off to Freedom. The new issue of Black Flag should be ready for the bookfair. And I’m making progress on the introduction to the Proudhon Reader. And talking of which, here is another exclusive extract which refutes Leninist Hal Draper’s attacks on Proudhon.

Engaging with the Class

One of the deep insights of anarchist theory is that means and ends are inseparable. The method of struggle will have important repercussions on the realisable ends. The development of Anarchist theory and practice has been a search for liberatory methods that are likely to create the society that we hope to see. The role of the organisation then has to fall in line with those tactics and strategies that are liable to bring about a libertarian society.

Successful meetings of your anarchist local organization

While speaking in New York in February 2008 I attended the local meeting of NEFAC in the city.  Observing the conduct of the meeting it struck me that a lot of things I took for granted about how meetings should be run were perhaps not as self-evident as I would have presumed.  So I wrote up a short piece for Anarchist Black Cat based on my experience of meetings and how I thought from this they should work.  While hunting down translations of my articles for my article archive on this site I realised that one Turkish language article on Anarkismo.net was actually a translation of that forum post.  As I want to add the translation I’m posting the original forum post here in order to link to the translation.

Completed the article archive – well sort of

Over the last few days I finally completed what turned out to be the mammoth task of moving my old article archive on the Struggle site onto this new site.  This has taken a crazy amount of time, I first created this site about 18 months ago, I’m not sure why it took so long to move 220 articles over but anyway that stage is now complete.  There are some articles I’ve published which are not yet online I’ll be adding soon and I’m only starting to move over translations of articles into other languages.

Shell to Sea ‘All the facts’ leaflet published

A couple of weeks ago Dublin Shell to Sea finished work on the ‘All the Facts’ leaflet some 120,000 of which are now being printed.  The basic idea to to try and get mass awareness of the facts of this struggle and in particular the ‘Great Oil & Gas Give-away.’ This is what Shell to Sea are calling the deal that has been given to Shell and other corporations under which they will pay almost no tax and no royalties on the vast wealth in gas and oil that lies in Irish waters and that they have been given by the Irish state.

Mutual Aid Introduction update

Just a very quick note to say that my article on Kropotkin’s mutual aid has been updated. This will be the text if and when AK Press UK publish it. While I had hoped that it would be out for this year’s London anarchist bookfair on the 24th of October, I’ve just been informed that it will be delayed. Hopefully it will appear sometime later this year. And, hopefully, the new Black Flag will be there at the bookfair…

An Anarchist FAQ version 13.3

AFAQ is now at release 13.3. So What’s New at the FAQ?

This is the last changes of section I, with the revision of the remaining three sub-sections. This revision was done on schedule and the next seems to be going well and as planned.
